Change of Event - St Luke's, 15th July
'Richard III, Murderer or Martyr', a Talk by Pam Strong
All most people remember about Richard III is that he was a hunchback and that he murdered the Princes in the Tower!' True or False?
Apparently, the portrait that had depicted Richard III with one shoulder much higher than the other was x-rayed and underneath experts found an older, original portrait, showing Richard III with even shoulders. Recent revelations disputing the story of Richard and the young princes have emerged.
True or False? Come and find out!

Freeing the Spirit of Inquiry - 'The Science Delusion' - Lecture by Rupert Sheldrake Ph.D.

Freeing the Spirit of Inquiry - 'The Science Delusion' - Lecture by Rupert Sheldrake Ph.D.
The science delusion is the belief that science already understands the nature of reality, in principle. The fundamental questions are answered, leaving only the details to be filled in. The impressive achievements of science seemed to support his confident attitude. But recent research has revealed unexpected problems at the heart of physics, cosmology, biology, medicine and psychology.
In his bestselling new book, Dr Rupert Sheldrake shows how the sciences are being constricted by assumptions that have hardened into dogmas. Should science be a belief-system, or a realm of enquiry? In the sceptical spirit of true scientific enquiry, Sheldrake turns the ten fundamental dogmas of science into questions, opening up startling new possibilities. For example, the 'laws of nature' may be habits that change and evolve. The Gravitational Constant may not be constant. Minds may extend far beyond brains. The total amount of matter and energy may be increasing. Memories may not be stored as traces in our brains.
Sheldrake argues that science would be better off without its dogmas: freer, more interesting and more fun.

St Luke's Programme 2012
We have an interesting programme of talks leading us up to Easter 2012. Our AGM will be held before the talk in either March or April.
15 January - A talk by Hephzibah Yohannan, title to be announced.
19 February - 'The Gospel of Thomas', a talk by Margaret Littler.
18 March - A talk by Alan Roberts, title to be announced.
15 April - 'Ecclesia Para Hexon', a beginners guide - a talk by John Cox (Khai).
The first 32 pages of Book 3 of Halliday's 'Contributions from a Potential Corpse' comprise a separately bound section called 'Ecclesia Para Hexon'. The Editor, David Mahlowe, told us that this was a favourite concept of Eugene Halliday, and so an understanding of it is important to the study of his work. The 61 entries comprising 'Ecclesia' vary from pithy statements of Halliday's understanding, to quite long and detailed sections, often supported by diagrams. While reference is made in the text to the 'Ecclesia Para Hexon' there is no narrative fully explaining exactly what this term signifies, why Halliday thought it so important, and why the ideas presented are relevant to it. Using key ideas from Halliday's works, this talk will set out to introduce a way of discovering what the 'Ecclesia' is, and why it is important to us.
All these meetings start at 2.15pm and are held at St Luke's Church, Vicarage Lane, Bowdon, Altrincham, Cheshire WA14 3AS. Entrance on the door is £6.00

The Philosophies of Shakespeare
Dr Alan Roberts will be giving a short course at the Wilmslow Guild, starting on 4th May. Pre-booking is advised.
The course will be a close reading of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' in a relaxed atmosphere taking x- time to explore the ideas enfolded into the plot of the play and the many references Shakespeare makes. It measures the genius of the author that he could meld the Athens of ancient Greece seamlessly with the woodland sprites of village England. We shall consider his reasons for this and the liberty he took putting the Fairy Queen, a title long associated with Elizabeth I, in a woodland bower seducing a donkey. How did he keep his head?
Please bring a text of the play. The Arden version is recommended but any copy will suffice.
